Colin Anderson

Colin Anderson paints landscapes of places that are unusual and less discovered – especially those that have a story, or the suggestion of a story, attached to them. 

He likes to bring out the strangeness of places that may be familiar to us, but might look subtly different in a parallel imaginative world – where everyday objects like chimneys or traffic markings can quietly come to life.

Many of these pictures have been the fruit of simply walking around. He has always liked to wander and explore: following the alley that leads to an undiscovered part of town; taking the path that brings unexpected glimpses of the ocean; climbing the barbed wire fence and ignoring the `Private Keep Out’ signs!

When he has discovered somewhere that intrigues him, he will make some sketches if he can and also take photos. He will then make a drawing at home that aims to bring out the intrinsic atmosphere and experience of a place. Sometimes this will be quite changed and distorted; at other times it will be left much as it looked. This design is then transferred to a canvas and he begins to paint.
