Gillian Smith

Gillian works with a variety of combined materials and processes to create richly coloured and textured pieces. Her work includes both paintings and mixed-media textiles. She has a longstanding love of the latter, particularly free-motion machine embroidery, which she partners with a growing range of materials and techniques to help her conjure a story, convey a thought, or develop a feeling.

Her work is inspired for the most part, by the beautiful natural world that surrounds us; its creatures, folklore, mythology and environmental issues. But, she also finds inspiration in the issues that affect us all.

Whether realistic or abstracted, moody or uplifting, her pieces often contain elements of storytelling and sometimes fantasy, which aim to create a narrative with the viewer. She is always striving to create atmosphere in her work. Gillian is showcasing her unique creations at the Artspring Gallery.
