SMI107, Spectrum
Freemotion Machine Embroidery
43 x 33 cm Framed
By Gillian Smith
A pair of free motion machine embroidered zebras, one black and white and the other rainbow coloured. The pair rest on a watercolour background. The piece is framed by deep white mount board and presented in a smart black frame.
Here the coloured zebra is used as a metaphor for tolerance and inclusion. As author Nita Prose says, "The world is a better place seen through a prism of colours, rather than merely in black and white. In this new world there is room for variations and versions, for shades of grey." A spectrum can be defined in a couple of different ways. It can be a band of rainbow colours and also a comparison range. We can all be found somewhere on that spectrum.
